Intent

Course summary

The Cambridge Technical course has been chosen as it offers a range of units that are chosen to meet the needs of the students. They begin with anatomy, physiology and building positive relationships units as these provide core concepts which will underpin all subsequent learning. Exam and coursework units have been strategically planned to ensure students are not overwhelmed in consideration with their other subjects. Throughout the course students will develop key transferrable skills such as time management, communication and dedication. The course is unique in that it requires students to quickly adapt to Key Stage 5 learning as they are presented with coursework early in their course of study. The course provides students with the skills and understanding that is required to progress within a health and social care career.  

Introduction and Structure

Equivalent to one A-level, this course covers the areas which are essential to health and social care and would be suitable for students considering a career in many avenues including, but not exclusive to, paediatrics and midwifery.

This specification introduces students to key concepts and a body of knowledge that will provide them with an invaluable and thoughtful perspective on contemporary issues in health and social care. It complements other A-level studies and equips students with skills needed for higher education and the world of work. Students will practically apply their skills and knowledge in preparation for further study or the workplace. They will develop professional and personal skills as well as theoretical knowledge and understanding. Students will consider the real impact (social, financial, psychological) to people living with conditions or illnesses, not just the signs, symptoms and treatment. They will also learn about  legislation and guidance supporting health and social care.

Course of Study

Year 12

Unit 1: building positive relationships
Unit 4: anatomy and physiology  
Unit 13: sexual health, reproduction and early stages development

Year 13

Unit 2: equality, diversity and rights
Unit 3: health, safety and security 
Unit 10: nutrition for health

Assessment

The course is a combination of exams and written coursework which are weighted equally at 50%.

Units 1, 2 and 4: 1 hour 30 minute exam
Units 3, 10 and 13: portfolio

Careers and Progression

The Cambridge Technical course provides a strong base for progression to university, apprenticeships or work and is recognised for UCAS tariff points. Career options include childcare, child development, occupational therapy, nursing, paediatrics, midwifery, social work, teaching, police officer, probation officer, medicine, paramedics, health visitor, mental health, counselling.

Entrance Requirements

Minimum requirement: 6 GCSEs Grades 9-4 (or equivalent), including Grade 4 or above in English and maths

Strongly recommended: Grade 5 in English and maths

Recommended: Grade 5 in science
